Mission & Purpose
The European Scientific Journal of Dual Higher Education (ESJ DHE) is the dedicated academic voice of Dual Higher education research in Europe and beyond and aspires to become a Scopus-indexed, open-access journal that adheres to the COPE Code of Conduct, Plan S open-access mandates, and international best practices in peer review. The journal publishes semi-annually online and operates through the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform, supporting a double-blind peer review process.
Thematic Scope
The European Scientific Journal of Dual Higher Education (ESJ DHE) positions itself as the dedicated academic voice for research in the dynamic and increasingly relevant field of dual higher education in Europe and beyond.
In a time of transformation in higher education systems across Europe and beyond, dual study formats - marked by the deliberate integration of academic learning with structured, work-based experience - are gaining strategic importance. They foster a new understanding of higher education: one that is not only academic, but also professional, contextual, and deeply embedded in real-world practice.
The ESJ DHE was founded to provide a scholarly home for this growing field. It addresses the urgent need for academic reflection, theory-building, and empirical research at the interface of higher education and the world of work. The journal welcomes rigorous, original contributions that explore the epistemic foundations, structural developments, pedagogical formats, and societal impacts of dual and cooperative higher education.
We especially encourage submissions that:
- Investigate theoretical frameworks and didactic models of work-integrated and practice-based learning,
- Examine institutional innovations and policy developments in dual higher education systems,
- Present empirical studies on student learning, academic-professional transitions, and employer engagement,
- Advance the international comparability and transferability of dual models across regions and disciplines.
Each issue may feature thematic foci, with specific calls for papers addressing timely and emerging issues in the field.
The ESJ DHE aspires to be more than a platform for publication - it aims to serve as a scholarly forum that brings together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers dedicated to the future of cooperative, context-sensitive, and professionally oriented higher education. By highlighting interdisciplinary (and/or (inter)national) approaches, best practices, and outcomes, the journal aims to contribute to the development of more effective, sustainable, and inclusive education systems that bridge the gap between theory and practice. It is committed to the highest academic standards, including double-blind peer review, open-access publishing under Plan S mandates, and alignment with the COPE Code of Conduct.
By creating a space for academic excellence in this field, ESJ DHE gives voice to the scientific exploration of dual higher education - and contributes to shaping its future.
In parallel, the European Journal of Dual Higher Education (EJ DHE) of the EU4Dual Alliance picks up this momentum and complements the scholarly exploration with a more hands-on, practice-oriented approach. It contains more applied insights, highlights concrete institutional practices, and fosters collaboration between academia and the world of work. Where ESJ DHE creates academic depth, the EJ DHE channels it into operational innovation – making the link from reflection to application tangible and reinforcing dual higher education as both a field of study and a mode of transformation.
